Eid al-Adha: Why do Muslims sacrifice animals and where is the practice legal in public?

Prophet Ibrahim (as): A Symbol of Sacrifice and Submission

The story of Prophet Ibrahim (as) preparing to offer his son Isma’il (as) as a sacrifice to Allah (swt) is not one of simply offering flesh and physical bloodhsed, but more so of spiritual sacrifice and submission to Allah (swt).

As the story goes, one day Ibhraim (as) dreamt that Allah (swt) wished for him to sacrifice his son Isma’il (as). Fearing it was a trick from Shaytan, he dismissed the dream until the command came again. From his reccuring dream, Prophet Ibhraim (as) knew that this was a command from Allah Almighty.

As an obedient servant of Allah (swt), Ibrahim took his son Isma’il (as) to Mount Arafat with a knife and rope in preparation for the sacrifice. He told young Isma’il (as) of his intentions but when he raised the knife, Allah (swt) intervened and spoke to Ibrahim (as): he was not to sacrifice his son, for this had merely been a test of his faith, devotion and submission to Allah (swt). Instead, Isma’il (as) was replaced with a sacrificial animal as a symbolic reminder:

‘And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead, We called to him, “O Ibrahim, You have fulfilled the vision.” Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. Indeed, this was the clear trial. And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice, And We left for him [favourable mention] among later generations: “Peace upon Ibrahim.” Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.’ (Qur’an, 37: 103-11)

Performing Qurbani Today🌷

Since then, every year, during the month of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the holy calendar, Muslims from around the world perform Qurbani to remember what Ibrahim (AS) did. We use his deed to inspire devotion, obedience, and submission in our own lives. Muslims sacrifice animals (preferably a goat, cow or camel) using special rules and practices, in memory of Prophet Ibrahim's (AS) sacrifice.

Therefore, Qurbani for Muslims is a lesson in obedience and submission. We must obey Allah's (SWT) command without pause. We must perform the tasks He has ordained compulsory on all Muslims such as praying Salat, performing Sawm, paying Zakat and embarking on the Hajj pilgrimage. May Allah (SWT) enable us to perform the Sunna of Ibrahim year in and year out. Ameen.

Due to the firm faith of both father and son, Isma'eel (AS) was replaced by a ram and his life was spared by Allah (SWT). In this story, we must, therefore, remember that Eid ul-Adha is not just a celebration, but the remembrance of one of the greatest sacrifices in history.

As we remember the story of Prophet Ibrahim's (AS) sacrifice every year, and we remember the obedience, devotion, and submission that he showed on that fateful day atop the mountain, we think of the importance of the celebration of Qurbani, and what we must do to honour it. For those of us blessed with enough wealth and prosperity that the giving of the sacrificial meat is not something we can do ourselves, we can help.

By donatin meat ,sadqa and aid ,so that your Qurbani obligation may be fulfilled, you serve those most in need and unite the Ummah in this time of joyous celebration as you follow a commandment that is blessed by Allah (SWT).

Transliteration: Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, laa ilaaha illal laah wallaahu akbar, Allaahu Akbar, wa lillaahil h’amd, Allaahu akbar a’laa maa hadaana.

Translation: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god except Allah, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and praise is for Allah, Allah is the Greatest, for that upon which He guided us.

O Allah let me make amends and compensate for my wrong doings, (so that) my religion becomes pure and O Allah remove the dirt from me.Ameen.
